FR. Le séminaire de troisième année dont j’ai assumé la responsabilité de 2014 à 2018 à l’université de Lyon/Saint-Etienne était dévolu à l’ethnographie urbaine, ainsi qu’à l’étude des problèmes sociaux. Ainsi ai-je dirigé les travaux d’initiation à la recherche de 42 étudiant-e-s entre septembre 2014 et juin 2018. 7 nouvelles directions sont en cours pour l’année 2018/2019 à l’université de Strasbourg.

EN. The third-year undergraduate seminar that I ran at the University of Lyon/Saint-Etienne from 2014 to 2018 was devoted to urban ethnography and the study of social problems. In this context, I supervised 42 students in their “initiation to research” projects, between September 2014 and June 2018. I am currently supervising 7 further students at the University of Strasbourg for the academic year 2018/2019.

FR. En tant que directeur du programme ANR SOCIORESIST (2013-2017), j’ai participé à l’encadrement des recherches menées par deux doctorantes : Sandra Trigano (thèse soutenue en 2015) et Aurélia Léon (thèse en cours).

À l’université de Strasbourg, j’encadre les recherches doctorales de Paola Delfino (1ère inscription en septembre 2018). Celle-ci travaille sur les liens entre le mouvement des squats, les soundsystems et la subculture dancehall dans l’Italie contemporaine.

EN. As director of the ANR SOCIORESIST research programme (2013-2017), I contributed to supervising the doctoral work of two students : Sandra Trigano (PhD obtained in 2015) and Aurélia Léon (PhD underway).

At the University of Strasbourg, I supervise Paola Delfino’s doctoral research (1st inscription in September 2018) on the links between squatters’ movement, soundsystems and dancehall subculture in contemporary Italy.

DOMAINES DE RECHERCHE/RESEARCH TOPICS

FR. À partir d’ethnographies multi-situées et d’une démarche d’enquête particulièrement sensible aux comparaisons, mes recherches décrivent les épreuves de la conflictualité et des dominations à l’état incarné : au plus près des corps et des vies qu’elles traversent. Tandis que de telles expériences se produisent partout où s’exercent des rapports dissymétriques de pouvoir (aussi bien dans les relations entre les genres, les ethnies ou les classes sociales), la sociologie et l’anthropologie françaises les ont jusqu’alors comprises ou expliquées en insistant principalement sur le même côté de la relation : c’est-à-dire sur le pouvoir au sens de ce qu’il dit ou fait dire (cf. Michel Foucault), compte tenu des effets d’imposition et des violences symboliques qu’il produit (cf. Pierre Bourdieu). Si bien qu’au tableau sociologique des « dominations ordinaires » continue de manquer en France l’esquisse d’une contrepartie pourtant bien réelle : celle des épreuves et des types de critiques que ces rapports de domination peuvent susciter en termes de « résistances ordinaires » des subordonnés. Mes travaux visent par conséquent l’analyse circonstanciée de cet autre côté de l’interaction : celui des résistances, appréhendées comme des formes socialement construites de (contre)pouvoirs décrits au contact quotidien de celles et ceux qui les incarnent en chair et en os.

Au croisement de la sociologie des problèmes et des mouvements sociaux, mes enquêtes ethnographiques ont jusqu’alors porté sur certains groupes parmi : les minorités ultramarines mises à l’épreuve de nos « tristes tropiques », les héritiers des immigrations pris dans le quotidien des banlieues, ainsi que les représentants de différentes subcultures labellisées comme « déviantes » (skinheads, punks et toxicomanes). De l’expérience à l’objet, je m’appuie sur la première pour constituer le second de sorte à tracer la silhouette épistémologique des formes de conflictualité au cœur desquelles je décèle ces résistances ordinaires dont l’étude constitue le dénominateur commun de mes engagements de chercheur. C’est dire qu’à la diversité des terrains abordés répond le rassemblement de l’enquête autour des questions du conflit, des résistances et des pouvoirs d’agir qu’elles supposent en transcendance de tel ou tel cas particulier. La centralité d’un tel travail, dont l’ensemble des dimensions ethnographiques se rejoignent sur un même problème diversement documenté, garantit tout autant la cohérence scientifique du projet qu’elle présente un gage de solidité pour une recherche appelée à se saisir de questions jadis placées par Georg Simmel et Max Weber au fondement des sciences sociales : les questions du conflit et des rapports de domination.

EN. Based on multi-sited ethnographies and an investigative approach with a strong comparative focus, my research describes the embodied ordeals of conflict and domination from a vantage point situated as close as possible to the bodies and lives of the dominated. While such ordeals can occur wherever dissymmetrical relations of power exist (in relations between genders, ethnic groups or social classes), until now French sociology and anthropology have understood or explained them by insisting mainly on the same “side” of the relationship. That is to say, they have focused on power in the sense of what it says or means (cf. Michel Foucault), taking into account the effects of imposition and the “symbolic violence” that it produces (cf. Pierre Bourdieu). The result is that the sociological chart of these different forms of “ordinary domination” is still lacking an outline of this very real counterpart in France : the ordeals and critiques that this domination can bring about in terms of the “ordinary resistance” put up by the dominated. My work consists in conducting a comparative sociology of a certain number of their mechanisms, seen as socially constructed forms of (counter)powers embodied by concrete actors. I therefore focus on detailed analysis of the other side of the interaction, on the side of resistance, understood as socially constructed forms of (contra)powers. I seek to describe these in the closest contact possible with the people who embody them in flesh and blood.

At the intersection of the sociology of social problems and social movements, my ethnographic surveys have thus far focused on certain groups among the overseas minorities enduring our “tristes tropiques”, the descendants of immigration caught up in the daily life of deprived neighborhoods, and the representatives of different subcultures labelled as “deviant” (skinheads, punks and drug addicts). From experience to object, I rely on the former to construe the latter with a view to tracing the epistemological outline of these ordinary forms of conflict and resistance—the common denominator in my commitment to research. Within the diverse range of practical situations addressed by my different inquiries, everyday forms of conflict and resistance—and the power to act that they suppose—are the key issues drawing together my work beyond the specificities of individual case studies. The centrality of this work—structured around the same, but diversely documented, key issues—both ensures its epistemological coherence and speaks to the solidity of this research, which addresses the questions that Georg Simmel and Max Weber located at the very foundation of the social sciences : the question of conflict and the question of relationships of domination.
